Generative engine optimisation barely existed as a phrase three years ago. It was coined in an academic paper in late 2023, picked up by a handful of startups in 2024, and by 2026 it has its own Gartner Market Guide, a unicorn tool vendor, and a $1.9 billion acquisition attached to it.
That makes GEO one of the fastest-forming disciplines marketing has produced. It also makes the numbers around it unusually messy, because the category is being measured, funded and sold faster than it is being standardised.
This article pulls together the verifiable numbers on the discipline itself: where the term came from, how fast interest is growing, which optimisations have actually been shown to lift AI visibility, and how much money is moving into GEO tools and services. Every figure below was checked against its original source in August 2026.

Where did GEO actually come from?
GEO began as an academic idea, not an agency service. The term was introduced in a November 2023 paper, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", by researchers from Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI and IIT Delhi, published on arXiv [1].
The paper did two things that still define the discipline. It built GEO-bench, a benchmark of 10,000 queries across multiple domains adapted for generative engines, and it proposed impression metrics for a world where there is no ranked list, only an answer that quotes some sources and ignores others [1].
The timing checks out in search data too. Ahrefs first saw the phrase "generative engine optimization" in US search results in late August 2023, recorded its first measurable search volume, 26 searches, in December 2023, the month after the paper landed, and the curve has climbed from there [4].
It is worth noting that "answer engine optimization" is much older. Ahrefs first recorded the phrase in April 2017, when it referred to featured snippets and voice assistants. The 2024-2026 boom recycled an existing term for a new problem [4].
How fast is search interest in GEO growing?
Extremely fast, from nothing. Ahrefs data pulled in August 2026 shows US monthly searches for "generative engine optimization" going from zero in August 2023 to roughly 14,300 at the July 2025 peak, with "answer engine optimization" growing about 38x over the same three years [4].

Two patterns stand out. First, "GEO" spiked hardest in mid 2025, when the trade press was busiest arguing about what to call the discipline, then cooled. Second, "answer engine optimization" has kept grinding upwards and is still setting new highs in August 2026, which suggests the buyer side of the market settled on the AEO label even as vendors kept both.
Treat the exact monthly figures loosely. Ahrefs' estimates for the GEO term step down sharply from April 2026, which looks more like a volume-model recalibration than a genuine collapse in interest, and its trailing 12-month average for the term still sits around 6,200 US searches and 25,000 globally [4].
Which countries search for GEO the most?
The US dominates, but the discipline is unusually European for a marketing trend. Germany and the Netherlands both over-index heavily relative to their size, which matches where several of the funded GEO tool vendors were founded.

Ahrefs' country breakdown for "generative engine optimization" puts the US first at roughly 6,200 average monthly searches, then Germany at 2,100, India at 2,000, the Netherlands at 1,600 and the UK fifth at 1,300 [4].
UK interest is real but smaller than the noise suggests. Ahrefs shows UK searches for "generative engine optimisation" growing from 114 per month in January 2024 to around 1,300 by August 2026, with "geo agency" at about 700 UK searches per month and a $4.50 average CPC [4].
Which GEO tactics have actually been shown to work?
Only one set of tactics has been tested in a controlled way at scale, and it comes from the original Princeton-led paper. Adding quotations, statistics and citations to a page each lifted visibility markedly. Traditional keyword stuffing made things worse [1].

The paper measured visibility using position-adjusted word count, essentially how much of the generated answer draws on your source and how early, against a 19.3% baseline share [1].

The more striking finding sits lower down the rankings. For sources sitting fifth in the underlying search results, adding citations produced a 115.1% visibility increase, quotations 99.7% and statistics 97.9% [1]. Generative engines flatten the advantage of ranking first, which is precisely why challenger brands got interested in GEO before market leaders did.
Two caveats matter. The experiments ran on 2023-era models plus a live test on Perplexity, where improvements reached 37%, and the authors were clear that which tactic wins varies by domain [1]. The paper is a proof that content changes can move AI visibility, not a permanent playbook. Engines have been retrained many times since.
How big is the GEO tool market?
Small in revenue, enormous in momentum. The announcement of Gartner's March 2026 Market Guide for Answer Engine Visibility Tools cites estimates valuing the global AEO tools market at $481 million in 2024, projected to reach $729 million by 2031 [3].
The guide's framing matters more than the market size. Gartner states that "the adoption of AEO is no longer experimental; it's a business priority, making answer engine visibility tools a baseline martech necessity", and names Semrush among its representative vendors [3].
Gartner's demand-side numbers explain why the category got a guide at all. It found that generative AI tools have edged past conventional search engines for solution discovery among buyers, 9% versus 8%, and that nearly 32% of buyers use tools like ChatGPT or Gemini somewhere in their purchase process [3].
A sub-$500 million tool market attached to that behavioural shift is why the money arrived. Which brings us to the funding.
How much money is flowing into GEO tools?
More than the current market size can justify on fundamentals, which tells you investors are pricing the category, not the products. The clearest case is Profound, which went from seed round to $1 billion valuation in about 18 months [6][7].

Profound's Series C announcement named Target, Walmart, Figma, MongoDB, Charlotte Tilbury and US Bank as customers [7]. Peec's Series A post disclosed $4 million+ ARR reached in 10 months, 1,300+ brands and agencies onboarded since February 2025, and 300+ new customers being added monthly [8].

Then there is the exit that validated the category. Adobe agreed on 19 November 2025 to acquire Semrush for $12.00 per share, roughly $1.9 billion, explicitly positioning the deal around generative engine optimisation and noting that traffic from generative AI sources to US retail sites was up 1,200% year on year that October [5]. Semrush's enterprise segment, where its AI visibility products sit, was growing ARR at 33% year on year at the time [5].
An incumbent paying $1.9 billion partly for GEO capability, seven months before Gartner sized the whole tools market below $500 million, is the single best illustration of how early this market still is.
Are marketers actually doing GEO work yet?
Adoption is broad but shallow. Most teams are aware, many are experimenting, very few can measure what they are doing. The Semrush 2026 AI Visibility Index, built on 126 million US prompts from January to April 2026, found only 9% of marketing leaders have tools to track all the AI visibility metrics that matter to them [9].
The same research offers the first decent evidence that doing the work pays. 81% of organisations that fully integrate SEO and AI visibility efforts reported increased traffic or leads, against 36% of organisations managing the two separately [9]. That is a correlation from a vendor survey, not a controlled trial, but the gap is large.
Individual brand programmes are now being reported with hard numbers. Semrush-backed research with 21stCenturyBrand describes Notion earning around 96,000 AI mentions per month, up 140% in six months, and Shopify growing AI mentions 360% over six months [10].
The demand side shows up in ad prices too. Ahrefs records an average $18.00 CPC on "generative engine optimization agency" and $10.00 on "geo agency" in the US, on terms that barely existed before December 2024 [4]. Agencies do not bid double-digit CPCs on services nobody is buying.
Are budgets shifting from SEO to GEO?
Directionally yes, but mostly by relabelling rather than replacement. Gartner's figures from the Market Guide announcement put SEM and SEO combined at 22.8% of CMOs' digital channel budgets, and martech overall at 22.4% of marketing budgets, with AEO tooling now framed as a baseline part of that stack [3].
The forcing function is Gartner's own February 2024 prediction that traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026, "with search marketing losing market share to AI chatbots and other virtual agents" [2]. Whether or not the fall lands at exactly 25%, most 2026 budget conversations start from that assumption.
Survey evidence on explicit reallocation exists but is thinner. One widely cited 2026 survey of enterprise marketing leaders found roughly two thirds allocating a quarter or more of budget to AI search optimisation, though as vendor-commissioned research it deserves a cautious reading.
The honest summary is that GEO budgets in 2026 are mostly SEO budgets with new line items: an AI visibility tool subscription, a content refactor project, and reporting time. The Semrush finding that integrated teams outperform separated ones suggests that is the right shape anyway [9].
How to read these numbers
The GEO paper's percentages come from benchmark experiments on specific models at a specific time. They prove the mechanism works, not that adding a statistic to your page lifts visibility 31% today, on every engine, in every niche [1].
Keyword volumes are estimates. Ahrefs models monthly search volume from clickstream panels, its figures moved visibly after an apparent recalibration in spring 2026, and Google Trends would give you different shapes for the same terms. Use the direction, not the third significant figure [4].
Market sizing for a three-year-old category is guesswork with a methodology section. The $481 million and $729 million figures are estimates quoted alongside the Gartner guide, and the 2031 projection is a projection, not an observation [3].
Funding and ARR figures come from the companies themselves, in announcements designed to attract customers and talent. They are the numbers firms chose to publish, audited by nobody.
Finally, survey findings about adoption and results, including the 81% versus 36% gap, are self-reported by marketers to a vendor that sells the solution. Credible sources disagree on almost every number in this space, which is itself the most honest statistic about GEO in 2026.
What this means going into 2027
The tactics that work are old-fashioned credibility signals. Quotations, statistics and citations lifted AI visibility in the only large controlled study we have; keyword stuffing hurt it. Content teams that already write well-sourced material are most of the way there [1].
GEO is a challenger's game. The 115.1% visibility gain for fifth-ranked sources means generative engines redistribute attention that classic SEO locked up. Expect the most aggressive GEO investment to keep coming from brands that were losing on Google [1].
Measurement, not tactics, is the 2027 bottleneck. With only 9% of marketing leaders able to track the metrics they care about, the winners of the tools land-grab will be whoever makes AI visibility reportable to a board [9].
Consolidation has started and will continue. Adobe paid $1.9 billion partly for this capability, Gartner has formalised the category, and point-solution vendors sitting between a unicorn and the martech suites will mostly get bought or squeezed [3][5][7].
The label will matter less every quarter. Search data shows "AEO" still growing whilst "GEO" cools from its 2025 peak, and buyers increasingly just call it search. Budget it as one discipline with two surfaces, ranked results and generated answers [4].
