ChatGPT is now less than four years old, and it is already one of the five most visited websites on Earth. What began as a research preview in November 2022 has become a daily habit for a meaningful slice of the world's adult population.
The numbers behind that shift matter because they keep being misquoted. Weekly active users get confused with monthly actives, web visits get confused with users, and projections get repeated as fact. This article pulls the verifiable figures together in one place: user counts and the growth timeline, message volumes, demographics, what people actually do with the tool, the free versus paid mix, revenue, app downloads, enterprise adoption and site traffic.
Wherever possible the figures below come from OpenAI's own disclosures, the OpenAI and NBER usage study published in September 2025, and measurement firms such as Similarweb and Appfigures. Where estimates disagree, we say so.
Key ChatGPT statistics for 2026
- ChatGPT passed 1 billion weekly active users in early August 2026, according to an OpenAI announcement reported by Stocktwits News [3].
- As of July 2025, ChatGPT users were sending 18 billion messages per week, and its 700 million weekly users represented nearly 10% of the world's adult population, per the OpenAI/NBER usage study [1].
- 73% of ChatGPT messages were non-work-related by June 2025, up from 53% a year earlier, according to the OpenAI/NBER study [1].
- Practical guidance (~29%), seeking information (~24%) and writing (~24%) together make up nearly 80% of all ChatGPT conversations. Computer programming is just 4.2% of messages and relationships/personal reflection 1.9%, per the OpenAI/NBER study [1].
- About 80% of early ChatGPT users had typically masculine first names in late 2022. By June 2025 active users were slightly more likely to have typically feminine names, the OpenAI/NBER study found [1].
- Nearly half of all messages sent by adults come from users under 26, according to the OpenAI/NBER study [1].
- OpenAI reported more than 1 million paying business customers and over 7 million ChatGPT for Work seats in November 2025, with seats up 40% in two months and enterprise seats up 9x year on year, per OpenAI [4].
- ChatGPT was the most downloaded app of 2025 with 770 million installs, according to Appfigures and AppMagic data compiled by Business of Apps [5].
- The ChatGPT mobile app has generated $3 billion in global consumer spending since its May 2023 launch, including $1.35 billion in 2025 alone, up 673% year on year, per Appfigures data reported by TechCrunch [6].
- ChatGPT generated an estimated $8 billion in revenue for OpenAI in 2025, a 128% increase on 2024, according to Business of Apps [5].
- chatgpt.com was the fifth most visited website in the world in May 2026, behind only Google, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, per Similarweb [8].
- ChatGPT crossed 100 million weekly active users in India in February 2026, per TechCrunch reporting compiled by DemandSage [7].
How many people use ChatGPT in 2026?
More than 1 billion people now use ChatGPT every week. OpenAI announced the milestone in early August 2026 alongside the launch of GPT-5.6, as reported by Stocktwits News [3].
![Statistic callout: 1 billion weekly active ChatGPT users reached in early August 2026 [3] Statistic callout: 1 billion weekly active ChatGPT users reached in early August 2026 [3]](/assets/blog/chatgpt-stat-1-billion-weekly-active-users.webp)
The last fully documented staging post before that was 900 million weekly active users in February 2026, up from 800 million in October 2025, per TechCrunch [2]. That is 100 million new weekly users in roughly four months.
Two caveats are worth holding onto. First, weekly active users is OpenAI's preferred metric and OpenAI is the only party that can see it, so every one of these milestones is a company disclosure rather than an independent measurement. Second, a "weekly active user" can be someone who asked one question, once. The figure tells you about reach, not depth.
Even so, the reach is remarkable. The OpenAI/NBER study noted that 700 million weekly users in July 2025 already represented nearly 10% of the world's adult population [1]. On the August 2026 number, that share is materially higher.
How fast has ChatGPT grown since launch?
Faster than any consumer software product before it. ChatGPT reached 1 million users in five days and roughly 100 million within two months of its November 2022 launch, then kept compounding through 2024, 2025 and 2026 [7].

Note the switch of metric partway down the table. Early milestones were reported as monthly or registered users; from late 2024 OpenAI standardised on weekly actives, which is a stricter measure. The growth is therefore slightly understated by the table, not overstated.
The interesting part for 2026 is that growth has not obviously slowed. Adding 100 million weekly users between October 2025 and February 2026, and another 100 million by August, is the kind of absolute growth most platforms never see at any point in their lifecycle.
How many messages do people send ChatGPT each day?
Billions. OpenAI disclosed in July 2025 that users were sending 2.5 billion prompts per day [6], and the OpenAI/NBER study measured 18 billion messages per week as of July 2025 [1].
![Statistic callout: 18 billion messages sent per week as of July 2025, from users then nearly 10% of the world's adult population [1] Statistic callout: 18 billion messages sent per week as of July 2025, from users then nearly 10% of the world's adult population [1]](/assets/blog/chatgpt-stat-18-billion-messages-per-week.webp)
Message volume is growing faster than the user count. The OpenAI/NBER paper found total message volume grew more than fivefold between July 2024 and July 2025, a period in which weekly users roughly trebled [1].
That gap between user growth and message growth is the single most useful signal in this whole dataset. It means existing users are deepening their usage, not just that new users keep arriving. Habits, once formed, intensify.
What do people actually use ChatGPT for?
Mostly everyday life, not work. The OpenAI/NBER study, the first large-scale analysis of real ChatGPT conversations, found that non-work messages rose from 53% of usage in June 2024 to 73% by June 2025 [1].
The topic breakdown undercuts most assumptions about what an AI assistant is for.

Two findings deserve emphasis. Coding, the use case most associated with AI in tech circles, is barely 4% of consumer ChatGPT messages. And companionship-style use, the subject of endless commentary, is under 2%.
For marketers the "seeking information" quarter is the number to watch. Roughly one in four of the billions of daily messages is functionally a search query, which is the mechanism behind every statistic about AI eating into discovery. The caveat: this study covers consumer plans only, so workplace and API usage, where coding dominates, sits outside these percentages.
Who uses ChatGPT? Age, gender and country
Younger, increasingly female, and increasingly outside rich countries. The gender gap that defined early adoption has closed, and users under 26 send nearly half of all adult messages [1].
The OpenAI/NBER study found that around 80% of active users had typically masculine first names in the weeks after launch. By June 2025, active users were slightly more likely to have typically feminine names [1]. The paper also recorded disproportionate growth in low and middle income countries through 2024 and 2025 [1].
Similarweb web traffic data for June 2026 puts the visitor split at 53.74% male and 46.26% female, with 25 to 34 year olds the largest age cohort [9]. The top countries by traffic share were the United States (18.13%), India (9.78%), Brazil (5.68%), Japan (4.97%) and the United Kingdom (3.18%) [9].

India is the story here. It is ChatGPT's second largest market by traffic and crossed 100 million weekly active users on its own in February 2026 [7]. Any analysis that treats ChatGPT as a primarily American product is a year out of date, and over 80% of web traffic now comes from outside the US.
How many people pay for ChatGPT, and how much revenue does it make?
A small minority pay, but that minority is large in absolute terms and growing quickly. OpenAI reported 50 million paying subscribers in February 2026, and said January and February were on track to be the largest months for new subscribers in its history [2].
Set 50 million subscribers against 900 million weekly users at the same date and the paid conversion rate works out at roughly 5 to 6%. That is the free-versus-paid mix in one line: for every subscriber, around 17 people use ChatGPT without paying.
On revenue, Business of Apps estimates ChatGPT generated $1.2 billion in 2023, $3.5 billion in 2024 and $8 billion in 2025, the last figure a 128% year-on-year increase [5]. Separately, CNBC-reported figures compiled by DemandSage put OpenAI's annual recurring revenue at $10 billion as of June 2025 [7].
Treat all revenue figures for OpenAI as estimates. It is a private company, the numbers reach the public via investor leaks and press reporting, and different outlets define "revenue" differently (ChatGPT subscriptions versus the whole company including API). The direction, at least, is not in dispute.
How many businesses use ChatGPT?
More than a million organisations pay for it. In November 2025 OpenAI announced it had passed 1 million business customers, which it described as the fastest-growing business platform in history [4].
The seat numbers show the pace. ChatGPT for Work passed 7 million seats, up 40% in just two months, and ChatGPT Enterprise seats grew 9x year on year [4]. The same announcement cited a Wharton study finding 75% of enterprises report positive ROI from AI deployment, with fewer than 5% reporting negative returns [4].
The 40%-in-two-months figure is the one that should concentrate minds. Consumer growth curves eventually saturate; enterprise seat expansion at that rate suggests workplace adoption was still in its steep phase going into 2026. It also explains why competitors are fighting hardest on the enterprise front.
How often is the ChatGPT app downloaded?
Often enough to top the global charts. ChatGPT was the most downloaded app of 2025 with 770 million installs, per Appfigures and AppMagic data compiled by Business of Apps, split roughly 350 million in the first half and 420 million in the second [5].
![Statistic callout: 770 million installs made ChatGPT the most downloaded app of 2025 [5] Statistic callout: 770 million installs made ChatGPT the most downloaded app of 2025 [5]](/assets/blog/chatgpt-stat-770-million-app-installs.webp)
Statista figures compiled by DemandSage put lifetime downloads at 1.44 billion, with a monthly peak of 73.4 million in December 2025 and 68 million downloads in February 2026 [7].
The money followed the installs. Appfigures data reported by TechCrunch shows the mobile app passed $3 billion in cumulative global consumer spending by December 2025, with $1.35 billion of that in 2025 alone, up 673% on 2024 [6].
An install is not a user, and mobile app spending is a fraction of OpenAI's revenue because most subscriptions are sold on the web where Apple and Google take no cut. But as a gauge of mainstream consumer pull, being the world's most downloaded app while nearly four years old is unusual. Most apps peak in their launch year.
How much traffic does chatgpt.com get?
Enough to make it the fifth most visited website on the planet. Similarweb ranked chatgpt.com fifth worldwide in May 2026, behind Google, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram [8].
The engagement profile is strong for a utility site. Similarweb's June 2026 data shows an average visit duration of 6 minutes 13 seconds, 3.86 pages per visit and a bounce rate of 31.94% [9]. DemandSage's compilation of Similarweb data puts monthly visits at 5.51 billion in April 2026, with 73.11% of visits from desktop [7].
The desktop skew surprises people, given the app's download numbers. It reflects where longer sessions happen: work hours, bigger screens, tasks involving copy and paste. Mobile carries the habit; desktop carries the workload.
One trend to note without overstating it: Similarweb reports that while ChatGPT still has the highest absolute traffic of any AI chatbot, its share of the overall AI chatbot market fell from 76.4% to roughly 52.7% over the year to May 2026 as Gemini and Claude grew [8]. Rivals are growing faster from smaller bases; ChatGPT's own traffic is still rising.
How to read these numbers
Every figure above comes from one of three kinds of source, and each kind fails differently.
OpenAI's own disclosures (weekly users, subscribers, business seats, message volume) are precise but unaudited and selectively timed. Companies announce milestones when the news is good.
Panel and clickstream estimates from Similarweb model traffic and demographics from sampled devices. They are directionally reliable but the absolute numbers carry error bars, which is why Similarweb's visit counts never quite match each other month to month, let alone match server-side data.
App intelligence firms such as Appfigures estimate downloads and store spending from app store signals. Downloads are not users, reinstalls inflate totals, and store spending misses web subscriptions entirely.
Two further habits will keep you honest. Never compare a weekly active user figure with a monthly one, a 1 billion WAU claim and a 1 billion MAU claim are very different achievements. And remember the NBER study covers consumer plans only, so "what people use ChatGPT for" excludes workplace and API usage.
What this means going into 2027
The user story is over; the depth story is starting. With around one in eight humans using ChatGPT weekly, raw user growth must eventually flatten. Message volume growing 5x while users trebled is the metric that will still be moving in 2027 [1].
ChatGPT is a consumer life-admin tool, not a work tool. With 73% of usage non-work and nearly 80% of conversations in guidance, information and writing, businesses should optimise for being the answer to practical consumer questions, not just B2B queries [1].
A quarter of messages are search-shaped. Seeking information at ~24% of billions of daily messages makes ChatGPT a discovery channel no visibility strategy can ignore, whatever its zero-click habits.
Enterprise is the growth engine to watch. Seats up 40% in two months and enterprise seats up 9x year on year suggest 2027's revenue mix will tilt further towards business customers [4].
Expect the demographic centre of gravity to keep moving. The gender gap has closed, half of adult messages come from under-26s, and the fastest growth is in low and middle income countries. The average ChatGPT user of 2027 will look nothing like the early adopter of 2023 [1].
