Perplexity Statistics 2026: Queries, Users, Revenue and Citations

A data-led look at Perplexity in 2026: query and user volumes, valuation and revenue, the Comet browser, publisher deals, shopping, and its distinctive citation patterns, with every stat cited to a named source.

Perplexity is the smallest of the big AI answer engines and the one that behaves most like a search engine. It cites sources on every answer, it sells subscriptions rather than ads, and it has spent two years picking fights with Google, Amazon and most of the American publishing industry.

That combination makes its numbers unusually interesting. Its valuation doubled twice in 2025, and its citation behaviour is measurably different from every other AI platform.

This article pulls together the verified numbers on Perplexity as of August 2026: queries, users, money, the Comet browser, publishers, shopping, and what its citation patterns mean for anyone trying to get recommended by it.

Key Perplexity statistics for 2026

How many queries does Perplexity actually handle?

The last hard disclosure came from the CEO. Aravind Srinivas told Bloomberg's Tech Summit that Perplexity processed 780 million queries in May 2025, around 30 million a day, with month-on-month growth running above 20%, as reported by TechCrunch [1].

Statistic callout: 780 million queries handled in May 2025, about 30 million a day, growing more than 20% month on month [1]

Srinivas framed the trajectory himself: "Give it a year, we'll be doing, like, a billion queries a week if we can sustain this growth rate." That was a projection, not a promise, and Perplexity has not published an official 2026 query figure to confirm or deny it.

For scale, the company served roughly 3,000 queries on its first day in 2022 [1]. Even at 780 million a month, Perplexity remains a rounding error next to Google's 5 trillion-plus searches a year.

The honest reading is that Perplexity is growing very fast from a small base, and each synthesised answer can replace several traditional queries, so raw volume comparisons understate it somewhat.

How many people use Perplexity, and who are they?

Somewhere in the low hundreds of millions of visits and tens of millions of users, depending on whose measurement you trust. Similarweb recorded 115.8 million visits to perplexity.ai in June 2026, making it the 370th most-visited website globally [7].

Similarweb's June 2026 panel data sketches the audience: 57.06% male, with 25 to 34 year olds the largest age cohort. The United States supplies 22.27% of traffic, India 10.45% and Germany 5.78% [7].

Engagement looks healthy for an answer engine. Visitors averaged 3.65 pages and 4 minutes 25 seconds per visit, with a 31.96% bounce rate [7].

Two caveats. First, Similarweb showed web traffic falling 16.15% month on month in June 2026, and its global rank slipping from 319 to 370 over three months, which may reflect usage migrating into the Comet browser and mobile apps where panel measurement is weaker [7]. Second, Sacra credits Perplexity with "more than 100M monthly active users", a company-friendly estimate no independent measurer has confirmed [5].

India is the growth engine. Sensor Tower data reported by TechCrunch showed Indian downloads up 600% year on year to 2.8 million in Q2 2025, and India becoming Perplexity's largest market by MAU at 3.7 million, still well behind ChatGPT's 19.8 million there [16]. A free 12-month Pro deal for Bharti Airtel's 360 million subscribers, one of more than 25 telco partnerships, was built to widen that funnel [16].

What is Perplexity worth, and how fast did it get there?

Perplexity's valuation went from $1 billion to $20 billion in roughly 18 months. The company raised a $500 million round at $9 billion in December 2024, per Bloomberg via TechCrunch [2], then kept raising through 2025.

By TechCrunch's count in March 2025, the company had been valued at $1 billion in April 2024 and $9 billion by December, with talks underway to raise up to $1 billion at $18 billion [3]. Sacra puts total funding at approximately $1.5 billion, with Accel, IVP, SoftBank Vision Fund 2, Nvidia and Jeff Bezos among the backers [5].

The most eye-catching number is not a funding round at all. In August 2025 Perplexity made an unsolicited $34.5 billion cash offer for Google Chrome, more than 20 times everything it had ever raised, including a pledge to invest $3 billion in Chromium and leave Google as the default search engine [4].

Nobody expected Google to sell. The bid was a statement about where Perplexity thinks the fight is: the browser, not the search box. Wikipedia's compiled timeline also records a three-year, $750 million Microsoft Azure GPU commitment signed in January 2026 [17].

How much revenue does Perplexity make?

Verified revenue is much smaller than the valuation implies, but growing extremely fast. Financials seen by The Information and reported by TechCrunch put 2024 revenue at roughly $34 million against about $65 million of cash burn [6].

Statistic callout: $20 billion valuation after a $200 million round in September 2025, up from $1 billion in early 2024 [5]

Annual recurring revenue then reportedly hit $80 million in January 2025 [6] and $100 million by March 2025, per Bloomberg via TechCrunch [3]. Sacra estimates $232 million for 2025 and $500 million in annualised revenue by April 2026, up 335% year on year, against a management target of $656 million by end-2026 [5].

Treat the 2026 figures as estimates. Sacra is a private-markets research firm working from partial information, and Perplexity publishes no audited numbers.

The revenue mix is deliberately subscription-heavy: Pro at $20 a month, Enterprise Pro at $40 per seat, and the Max tier launched in July 2025 at $200 a month [6]. Wikipedia's timeline records that in February 2026 Perplexity discontinued its advertising programme, first launched in November 2024, in favour of a subscription-first model [17].

Even at $500 million annualised, the company trades at roughly 40 times revenue on its September 2025 valuation. The funding market is paying for the browser and agent story, not the current P&L.

How is the Comet browser actually doing?

Adoption numbers are thin, but the rollout has been aggressive. Comet launched on 9 July 2025 as an exclusive for $200-a-month Max subscribers, and TechCrunch reported that "millions" joined the waitlist before it went free for everyone on 2 October 2025 [11].

An Android version followed on 20 November 2025, with a built-in ad blocker and an agent that can research and shop on the user's behalf [12]. By May 2026 Perplexity had extended the same agentic push to the desktop with Personal Computer, a local AI agent bundled into its Mac app for Pro and Max subscribers [18].

Perplexity has not published a Comet user count, which is itself informative. "Millions on a waitlist" is a demand signal, not an installed base, and browser switching is one of the hardest habits in consumer software to break.

The strategic logic is retention. Srinivas has said that "if people are in the browser, it's infinite retention" [1], and in November 2025 Perplexity agreed to pay Snap $400 million in cash and equity to power AI search inside Snapchat for its 940 million users [14]. That deal ended "amicably" in May 2026 before revenue recognition meaningfully began, a reminder that headline partnership numbers are not the same as delivered value [15].

How does Perplexity cite sources, and how is it different?

Perplexity is the most Reddit-dependent and the most predictable citer of the major AI platforms. A Profound analysis of 680 million citations between August 2024 and June 2025 found Reddit was Perplexity's top domain at 6.6% of all citations, 46.7% of its top-ten citation share, against just 1.8% on ChatGPT and 2.2% on Google AI Overviews [8].

Profound's follow-up work on Reddit, covering more than 4 billion citations to late October 2025, still ranked Reddit as the number one cited domain on Perplexity, versus number two on ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews and number 31 on Microsoft Copilot [9].

Bar chart: Reddit citation share by AI platform. Perplexity 6.6%, Google AI Overviews 2.2%, ChatGPT 1.8%. Source: Profound analysis of 680 million citations, 2025.

The mechanics are unusually consistent. SE Ranking tested 2,000 keywords across 20 niches in early 2025 and found Perplexity answered 99.95% of them, attached 5.01 links per response on average, and returned exactly five sources in 1,980 of 1,999 answers [10].

The same study found Perplexity's cited domains averaged 14 years old, and its domain duplication rate of 25.11% was far more diverse than ChatGPT's 71.03% [10]. In plain terms: five slots per answer, a strong bias to established domains, and a heavy thumb on the scale for community content. Wikipedia, ChatGPT's favourite source, does not even make Perplexity's top ten [8].

What is happening with Perplexity and publishers?

Perplexity runs the most developed publisher payment scheme of any AI answer engine, and it is still being sued. Its revenue-sharing publisher programme launched in July 2024 [17] and expanded in December 2024 to include the LA Times, Adweek, The Independent, Lee Enterprises and a dozen others, per TechCrunch [19].

Comet Plus followed in August 2025: a $5-a-month subscription whose revenue is shared with publishers based on three traffic types, human visits, search citations and agent actions, with Perplexity keeping only a cut for compute costs [13]. TechCrunch reports the publisher share at 80% of the fee [20].

Money has not bought peace. The New York Times sued Perplexity for copyright infringement in December 2025, days after the Chicago Tribune, even as Gannett, TIME, Fortune and the LA Times sit inside the programme and Getty Images signed a multi-year licensing deal in October 2025 [20].

For marketers the takeaway is simpler than the legal picture. Perplexity is contractually motivated to send traffic and pay sources, which makes citations there more durable than on platforms with no publisher economics at all.

Can people actually shop inside Perplexity?

Yes, and they have been able to since before ChatGPT could. Perplexity launched its shopping feature for US Pro subscribers in November 2024, with product cards, pros and cons, one-click checkout with stored payment details, and free shipping on Pro purchases, per TechCrunch [21].

The integration leans on Shopify's seller network, and a merchant programme gives enrolled retailers richer product data in Perplexity's index plus free API access. At launch Perplexity said it took no affiliate cut and sold no sponsored slots in shopping results [21].

Agentic shopping has since moved into Comet, whose Android assistant can "research and shop on your behalf" [12]. That has already produced friction: Amazon sent Perplexity legal threats over agentic browsing in November 2025.

An answer engine holding structured product feeds, stored cards and a browser agent is building a transaction layer. The retailers who feed it clean merchant data are the ones its recommendations will favour.

How do marketers get cited by Perplexity?

Optimising for Perplexity is mostly a fight for five slots. With almost every answer carrying exactly five citations [10], the practical question is which five domains fill them.

The verified data points to four levers. First, Reddit: at 6.6% of all citations and nearly half of top-ten citation share, credible presence in relevant subreddits is worth more on Perplexity than anywhere else [8]. Second, video: YouTube is its second domain at 2.0% [8].

Third, authority and age: cited domains average 14 years old, so newer brands should chase coverage on established review and industry sites such as Gartner and Yelp, both top-five Perplexity sources [8, 10]. Fourth, breadth: with a 25.11% domain duplication rate, Perplexity spreads citations across far more domains than ChatGPT, so mid-sized sites have a genuinely better shot [10].

Keep expectations proportionate. Perplexity drives only around 7% of the already small AI referral channel on SE Ranking's 2026 measurement, so treat it as a high-intent, low-volume source.

How to read these numbers

Almost every figure here comes from one of three imperfect instruments. Company disclosures are selectively released when flattering and unaudited. Panel-based estimates like Similarweb's get weaker as usage shifts into apps and the Comet browser, and private-market estimates from Sacra and The Information are triangulated from partial financials.

That is why credible sources disagree. Similarweb's visit counts, Sacra's 100 million MAU claim and Sensor Tower's app figures measure different things over different windows [5] [7] [16].

Citation studies have their own limits. Profound and SE Ranking sampled specific prompt sets over specific months, and Profound's own data shows Reddit's citation share swinging from 7% to 1% and back within weeks [9], so treat citation percentages as snapshots, not stable algorithms.

Finally, projections are not observations. The billion-queries-a-week line, the $656 million revenue target and any 2026 valuation above $20 billion are targets or estimates, not audited facts.

What this means going into 2027

Perplexity is now a browser company that happens to run a search engine. The Chrome bid, Comet going free, the Snap deal and Personal Computer all point the same way. Judge it in 2027 by disclosed Comet numbers, not query counts.

The subscription-first pivot raises the stakes on paid conversion. Having reportedly walked away from advertising in February 2026, Perplexity has to close the gap between an estimated $500 million run rate and a $20 billion-plus valuation on subscriptions and API revenue alone [5] [17].

Reddit remains the cheapest visibility arbitrage on the platform. No other major answer engine leans this hard on community content. Expect that gap to narrow as Perplexity diversifies sources, so the window is now [8].

Publisher economics will spread or shrink under litigation. With the NYT and Chicago Tribune suits live and 80% of Comet Plus fees flowing to publishers, 2027 will show whether paying sources becomes the industry norm or a legal settlement line item [20].

Measure it as a high-value niche, not a Google rival. On every independent measure Perplexity is one to two orders of magnitude smaller than Google. Its users are technical, affluent-skewing and source-clicking, which is exactly why disproportionate optimisation effort per visitor can still pay.
