Plumber Marketing Statistics 2026: Business Counts, Lead Costs and the Heat Pump Boom

A sourced look at plumber marketing in 2026: how many plumbing businesses there are in the UK, what plumbers earn and charge, how much emergency and out-of-hours work is worth, what plumbing keywords cost, how seasonal demand moves through the year and how big the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and heat pump opportunity has become, drawn from the ONS, DESNZ, Checkatrade, Ahrefs and LocaliQ, with every stat cited.

Plumbing is the trade that never quite behaves like the rest of construction. When housebuilding slows, people still get burst pipes. When budgets tighten, boilers still fail in December.

That non-discretionary core is why plumbing and heating businesses have kept growing whilst the wider building trades have wobbled. It is also why the marketing economics look so different: high intent, high urgency, and some of the most expensive clicks in UK local search.

What follows is a set of verified 2025 and 2026 figures on the size of the trade, what plumbers earn and charge, how demand moves through the year, what plumbing keywords cost, and how big the heat pump opportunity has become now that four years of Boiler Upgrade Scheme data exist.

Key plumber marketing statistics for 2026

How many plumbing businesses are there in the UK?

There were 47,050 VAT or PAYE registered enterprises classified under plumbing, heat and air-conditioning installation in the UK in 2025. That is the count of registered businesses, not the count of people who fit taps for a living.

The ONS UK Business Counts series, accessed through Nomis, shows this figure has grown almost every year for fifteen years [1]. In 2010 it was 30,750. That is a 53% increase.

YearRegistered plumbing, heat and air-con installation enterprises (UK)
201030,750
201533,845
202040,030
202345,225
202446,215
202547,050

Bar chart: registered UK plumbing enterprises, 2010 to 2025. 2010 30,750, 2015 33,845, 2020 40,030, 2023 45,225, 2024 46,215, 2025 47,050. Source: ONS UK Business Counts via Nomis [1].

What makes this number useful is what sits underneath it. 40,340 of the 47,050 have zero to four employees. Another 4,010 have five to nine. Only 300 firms in the entire country employ 50 people or more.

So the competitive set in almost every postcode is a few dozen one-van and two-van operations, a handful of small firms with an office, and one or two national players buying the same clicks. There is no dominant middle, which means a plumbing business with even modest marketing discipline can outrank most of its local market on effort alone.

The registered count also understates the trade. Businesses below the VAT threshold with no employees do not appear at all, so the true population of working plumbers is considerably larger.

What do plumbers actually earn?

Median gross annual pay for full-time plumbers and heating and ventilating installers and repairers was £37,881 in 2025, with a median hourly rate of £18.18. Both figures come from ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings Table 14, provisional 2025 data [2].

The annual median fell 0.6% year on year in nominal terms, whilst the mean rose 2.1%. Hourly pay went the other way, up 2.6% at the median.

Median gross hourly pay£18.00£18.18
Annual change, median annual pay-2.3%-0.6%

Source: ONS ASHE Table 14, 2025 provisional [2]

Here is the trap. ASHE surveys employees only. Drawn from PAYE records, it captures the plumber on a firm's payroll and misses the self-employed sole trader entirely, which given the business-size data above is most of the trade.

That gap matters commercially. ASHE tells you what the employed end of the market earns. It tells you very little about the owner-operator, whose income is a function of day rate, utilisation and how many emergency call-outs they win at premium prices.

What do plumbers charge, and how much more for emergencies?

Checkatrade's cost guide, last updated June 2026, puts the average UK plumber at £50 per hour and £350 per day, with a typical call-out fee of £110 [3]. Emergency work averages around £100 per hour, within a stated range of £75 to £150.

Statistic callout: £50 average UK plumber rate per hour, with £350 per day and a £110 call-out fee [3]

That is roughly a doubling for out-of-hours and emergency jobs. Checkatrade's own guidance says to expect an emergency plumber to charge up to twice their normal hourly rate on top of a call-out charge [3].

For boiler work, Checkatrade's March 2026 new boiler guide puts installation labour at around £300 per day, a like-for-like combi swap at £2,500 to £4,000 supplied and fitted, and the full range of supply-and-install jobs at £3,000 to £15,000 [7].

The commercial read is straightforward. A plumbing business has two very different products sharing one van. Planned work is scheduled, price-compared and margin-thin. Emergency work is a distress purchase where price sensitivity collapses and the customer picks whoever answers.

Budget should not be split evenly across the two. The emergency side justifies far higher acquisition cost per job, and it is bought differently: phone-first, availability-led, and heavily dependent on being visible at 11pm on a Sunday.

Home and home improvement is one of the more expensive categories in paid search. LocaliQ's 2026 search advertising benchmarks, published June 2026 from campaign data across Google Ads and Microsoft Ads, put the category average CPC at $8.33 against an all-industry average of $5.42 [6].

Cost per lead follows. Home and home improvement averages $90.92 per lead against $66.69 across all industries, with a click-through rate of 6.47% and a conversion rate of 8.05% [6].

Average cost per lead$90.92$66.69
Average conversion rate8.05%8.18%

Source: LocaliQ 2026 Search Advertising Benchmarks [6]

Note the shape of that. The category converts at almost exactly the all-industry average but costs 54% more per click. The premium is entirely on the auction side, not on conversion performance.

LocaliQ's data is US-weighted and category-level, so it is a directional benchmark rather than a UK plumbing figure. But the direction is confirmed by keyword-level pricing.

Which plumbing keywords cost the most?

Ahrefs Keywords Explorer data for the UK, pulled in August 2026, shows a clear pattern: the urgency modifier is what you pay for [5].

UK keywordMonthly search volumeCPC (USD)

Bar chart: plumbing keyword cost per click, Ahrefs GB 2026. emergency plumber london $12.00, boiler installation $7.00, emergency plumber $6.00, emergency plumber near me $5.00, boiler service $3.50, plumber $1.10. Source: Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, GB, August 2026 [5].

"emergency plumber" costs more than five times "plumber" per click despite lower volume. "emergency plumber london" costs more than ten times. At the extreme end, Ahrefs records "emergency plumber tooting" at a $35.00 CPC on 700 monthly searches, which tells you what a handful of aggressive London operators are willing to pay for a job they know converts [5].

Meanwhile "air source heat pump" pulls 27,000 monthly UK searches at $1.80. That is the highest-volume, lowest-cost term in the whole set, and it is almost entirely research intent rather than buying intent.

The strategic implication is a barbell. Emergency terms are worth bidding on because the job value and close rate carry the click cost. Heat pump terms are worth ranking on organically because the cost of buying that traffic makes no sense against a long, uncertain consideration cycle.

How seasonal is plumbing demand?

Very, but not uniformly. Different job types have completely different curves, and the sharpest ones are the ones nobody plans for.

Ahrefs volume history for the UK shows "boiler repair" peaking at 7,539 monthly searches in December 2025 and bottoming at 2,685 in June 2025, a 2.8x swing [5]. "emergency plumber" peaked at 10,670 in December 2025 against 6,814 in May, a milder 1.6x [5].

"frozen pipes" is the extreme case. Ahrefs recorded 3,192 UK searches in January 2026 and 417 in July 2026, and in the previous cycle 3,949 in January 2025 against just 93 in April 2025 [5].

emergency plumber10,670 (Dec 2025)6,814 (May 2025)1.6x

Source: Ahrefs Keywords Explorer volume history, GB [5]

Statistic callout: 7.7x seasonal swing in frozen pipes searches, from 3,192 in January to 417 in July [5]

The useful insight is that emergency plumbing is the least seasonal of the three. Pipes burst, toilets block and taps fail all year. What spikes in winter is specifically heating failure and cold-weather damage.

That reframes budget planning. A plumber who pours everything into a December push is buying the most competitive month at the highest prices. Building baseline visibility on year-round emergency terms, then layering a heating-specific push from October, gives a far cheaper blended cost per job.

How big is the boiler replacement and heat pump opportunity?

Bigger than it was, and growing at a rate that most plumbing businesses have not adjusted their marketing to reflect.

By the end of May 2026, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme had received 130,988 voucher applications, issued 111,633 vouchers and paid 84,879 redemptions in England and Wales, per DESNZ official statistics compiled from Ofgem data [4].

The annual trend is the interesting part.

Applications rose 19% in 2025/26 and redemptions paid rose 23%. May 2026 applications were 19% up on May 2025 [4].

Two details reshape how a plumbing business should think about this. First, 98% of applications are for air-to-water heat pumps, so this is effectively a single-product market [4]. Second, 55% of installations with a paid redemption replaced a gas system, and 62% of grant-receiving properties were on the gas grid [4].

That second figure is the one to sit with. The dominant BUS customer is not an off-grid rural household with an oil boiler. It is a mains gas household choosing to switch, which means whoever would otherwise have sold them a combi replacement is losing the job to a firm that markets heat pumps in that area.

The median reported air-to-water heat pump installation cost £13,100 in 2026 Q1 including the grant, with a lower quartile of £11,350 and an upper quartile of £15,756 [4]. Ground source medians ran £27,352 [4]. Checkatrade's May 2026 guide puts air-to-water installation at £6,000 to £11,000, averaging £8,000 [8].

Against a £2,500 to £4,000 combi swap [7], a heat pump job is worth three to five times as much. Even at a much longer sales cycle and a much lower close rate, the maths is compelling.

The work is also geographically concentrated. Of all redemptions paid, 20% were in the South East and 18% in the South West, against just 3% in the North East [4].

Is anyone coming into the trade?

Supply is the quiet constraint on all of this. Checkatrade research on 16 to 25 year olds, published in 2026, found that 65% would consider a career as a plumber, electrician or roofer, and 75% said they want a career where their skills cannot easily be replaced by a machine [9].

Two-thirds (66%) said a career in the trades is a respected path, and 50% of women said they would consider one [9].

Interest is not the same as entry, and Checkatrade does not publish a sample size for this research, which is worth flagging. But the sentiment direction has a marketing consequence most owners miss.

Recruitment marketing and customer marketing now compete for the same attention. A plumbing business that ranks well locally, has a strong review profile and looks like a real organisation online will find hiring easier than one that exists only as a mobile number on a van.

How to read these numbers

Business counts and employee earnings are different universes. The ONS figure of 47,050 covers VAT or PAYE registered enterprises only, so unregistered sole traders are invisible in it [1]. ASHE covers employees on payroll, so it excludes the self-employed majority [2]. Neither is a count of working plumbers.

The 2025 ASHE data is provisional and will be revised. Treat the -0.6% median annual change as an early signal rather than a settled fact.

Cost-guide averages from Checkatrade are compiled from job data and market research, not from a probability sample. A £350 day rate in central London and a £350 day rate in County Durham are not the same number in practice.

Search volumes from Ahrefs are modelled estimates built from clickstream data and Google's own signals, not counts of actual searches. They are reliable for comparing keywords and tracking shape over time, less reliable as absolute counts, and figures a year or more forward in the series are projections.

CPC figures are averages across all advertisers in the auction, quoted in US dollars, and they move with competitor bidding. A single aggressive advertiser can pull a local CPC up dramatically, which is almost certainly what is happening on "emergency plumber tooting".

LocaliQ's benchmarks come from its own customer base, which skews to small and mid-sized advertisers and to the US market. Read them as a sanity check, not a target.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme statistics are the strongest data here: official statistics from DESNZ built on Ofgem records and the MCS Installation Database, so counts rather than estimates. Two caveats apply. They cover England and Wales only, and applications, issued vouchers and paid redemptions are separate stages with a lag between them, so comparing an application figure to a redemption figure in the same month understates conversion.

One figure this article deliberately omits: a headline count of Gas Safe registered engineers. The register does not publish an openly accessible number that could be verified directly, and the widely circulated figures trace back to secondary reporting rather than to the register itself.

What this means going into 2027

The heat pump market is no longer a fringe. Four consecutive years of BUS growth, 31,104 redemptions paid in 2025/26 alone, and a majority of installs replacing gas systems on the gas grid. A plumbing business that does not have a heat pump page and a heat pump enquiry route is losing its highest-value jobs to firms that do.

Emergency search is the profit centre and should be budgeted as one. It is the least seasonal demand, the highest CPC, and the highest close rate. Paying $6 or $12 a click hurts far less when the job carries an emergency rate of £100 an hour and a £110 call-out.

Organic is the only sane way to own heat pump demand. 27,000 monthly searches on "air source heat pump" at $1.80 a click is research traffic, not buying traffic. Buying it is expensive and slow to pay back. Ranking for it, and for the grant and cost questions that surround it, is a compounding asset.

Regional imbalance is an opportunity, not just a statistic. The North East accounts for 3% of BUS redemptions and the South East 20%. Low-competition markets with real underlying demand are where a modest content and local SEO budget goes furthest.

Recruitment and customer acquisition are converging. With two-thirds of 16 to 25 year olds open to the trades and a business population dominated by firms of fewer than five people, the plumbing companies that grow past the one-van ceiling in 2027 will be the ones whose online presence convinces both customers and applicants.
