For two years the argument about AI search was about volume. That argument is mostly settled, and the answer is not flattering for publishers. The live argument in 2026 is about quality. AI assistants send very little traffic, but several large panels now report that the traffic they do send converts unusually well. If that holds, a channel worth 0.2% of sessions could be worth several times that in revenue. It is also where the data is weakest. Conversion claims about AI referrals rest on small denominators, inconsistent attribution and a heavy dose of selection effect. Below are the figures worth quoting, and where each is likely to mislead.

Do AI-referred visitors actually convert better than organic search?
On most large panels, yes. Adobe, Shopify and Semrush all report AI referrals beating organic search on conversion in 2026, having reported the opposite in 2024.
Adobe Analytics found AI-referred retail visitors converting 42% more than non-AI traffic in March 2026, having converted at roughly half the rate a year earlier [2]. In travel, the deficit narrowed from about 86% in October 2024 to 14% in March 2026 [2].

Shopify reported AI-referred sessions converting at nearly 50% higher rates than organic search on product detail pages in Q1 2026, an advantage that held in 23 of 25 merchant categories [1].
The swing is worth spelling out. Adobe found AI traffic 43% less likely to convert in July 2024, narrowing to a 9% deficit by February 2025 [17]. By May 2026 the same measurement had AI traffic converting 54% better than non-AI, as reported from Adobe Analytics data by Digital Commerce 360 [18].
The reversal is the interesting part, not the multiple. In mid-2024 AI assistants dumped people onto homepages and generic category pages. By 2026 they were landing on specific products, and Shopify's own data explains why the conversion numbers moved: more than half of AI-referred sessions now start on a product detail page, against about 20% for organic search [1].
That reframes the finding. AI referrals may not convert better because AI users are better customers, but because the assistant has already done the top and middle of the funnel and delivers the visitor at the point of purchase. Much of the advantage is landing-page mix rather than visitor quality, a point that connects to the wider AI referral traffic statistics.
How much is an AI search visitor actually worth?
Estimates range from roughly 4x an organic visitor to no advantage at all, depending on who is measuring and what they count as a conversion.
Semrush puts the average AI search visitor at 4.4 times as valuable as the average traditional organic visitor, measured on conversion rate [4]. Adobe's revenue-per-visit measure is more conservative, at 37% higher for AI traffic in retail in March 2026 [2].

Contentsquare is the outlier, and the largest dataset of the three. Across 99 billion sessions on 6,500 sites, AI-referred traffic converted at 1.3% in 2025, up 55% year on year, but still below email at 1.9% [3].

Note what varies underneath. Semrush's figure comes from a topic-defined sample in one vertical, Shopify measures only its own merchants, and Contentsquare measures across everything including publishers and low-intent sites, which is precisely why its number is the least exciting.
The pattern is consistent: the narrower and more commercial the sample, the better AI traffic looks. Treat 4.4x as an upper bound, not a planning assumption.
Do AI-referred shoppers spend more per order?
Modestly, yes. Shopify found orders from AI-powered search carrying 14% higher average order values than organic search in Q1 2026 [1].
That is a much smaller lift than the conversion gap, and the more believable of the two numbers. Order value does not depend on a denominator of sessions that analytics platforms classify inconsistently, so it is harder to distort with attribution quirks.
Shopify also reported AI chatbot referral sessions growing more than 8x year on year, with AI-referred orders growing nearly 13x [1]. Orders outpacing sessions is the clearest signal that the channel is genuinely improving rather than simply getting bigger.
Be careful with the base. Shopify has not published the absolute share of orders involved, so a 13x increase could be movement from very little to slightly more than very little.
Are AI-referred sessions more engaged, or just different?
Engagement metrics for AI traffic are strong and reasonably consistent across sources. Adobe's Q2 2026 report shows longer sessions, more pages and lower bounce rates across every industry it tracks.

Seer Interactive found ChatGPT visitors viewing 2.3 pages per session against 1.2 for Google organic on one client, with a 62% engagement rate [5].
There is a plausible non-flattering reading. Someone arriving from an AI assistant has already been given a summary and a recommendation, so the visit is a verification exercise. Longer sessions can mean deeper interest, or they can mean the visitor is checking whether the assistant told them the truth.
Either way the implication is the same. Those pages need to state the facts the assistant asserted, clearly and quickly, or the verification fails.
How far have click-through rates fallen on results with AI Overviews?
Substantially, and the effect is now well replicated. Seer Interactive measured organic CTR at 2.36% when an AI Overview appeared against 3.82% when it did not, in February 2026, across 5.47 million queries and 2.43 billion organic impressions for 53 brands [6].

Paid results took a hit too. Seer recorded paid CTR of 16.21% with an AI Overview present against 21.85% without, on 296.9 million paid impressions [6].
Being cited inside the Overview helps but does not restore the loss. On informational queries across the full year, brands cited in the AI Overview averaged 2.07% organic CTR against 0.94% when not cited, and 3.35% when no Overview appeared at all [6].
That is the single most useful number here. Citation is worth roughly double the clicks of non-citation, and still leaves you around 38% below where you would have been with no AI Overview on the query. Winning citations is damage limitation, not recovery.
There is a recovery story hiding in the data. Seer notes AI Overview-present organic CTR climbing from a floor of 1.3% in December 2025 to 2.4% by February 2026 [6]. Whether that is Google rebalancing links or a seasonal artefact is not yet clear, and Seer flags that its projections use OLS regression with no seasonality adjustment.
What has happened to position-one click-through rate?
The top organic position has lost a lot of its historical premium on AI Overview queries, though the size of the loss depends heavily on the study.
Ahrefs analysed 300,000 keywords, half with an AI Overview and half without, and found the presence of an Overview correlated with a 34.5% lower average CTR for the top-ranking page [7]. Position-one CTR on Overview keywords fell from 0.073 in March 2024 to 0.026 in March 2025.
Ahrefs' own more recent benchmark work puts the drop higher, stating that clicks to the top organic result fall by roughly 58% when an AI Overview is present [11]. Same publisher, different method, near double the estimate.
That inconsistency is not sloppiness. It reflects a genuine measurement problem: AI Overviews are not randomly assigned to queries. They appear disproportionately on informational, question-shaped searches, which had lower CTR to begin with, so a naive with-versus-without comparison overstates the causal effect and a heavily controlled one may understate it.
Seer's intent breakdown makes the exposure clear. Around 36% of informational queries showed an AI Overview against 8% of commercial and 5% of transactional queries [6]. If your revenue comes from transactional search, the CTR collapse is largely happening to someone else's traffic.
How many searches now end without a click?
Roughly two-thirds in the US, on panel measurement. SparkToro found 68.01% of US Google searches ending without a click between January and April 2026, against 60.45% in 2024 [9].

The Pew Research Center study remains the cleanest behavioural evidence. Tracking 900 US adults across 68,879 searches in March 2025, users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, against 15% where none did, and clicked a link inside the summary on just 1% of such visits [8].
Pew also found 26% of AI-summary visits ended the browsing session entirely, against 16% without [8]. That is the number that should worry anyone whose business model assumes a search leads somewhere.
The device split matters. Similarweb puts the 2026 desktop zero-click rate at 79.6% against 54.8% on mobile [14]. One headline number hides two very different markets.

Bain & Company put the zero-click rate at about 60% in February 2025 and estimated AI summaries were cutting organic web traffic by 15% to 25% [12]. Three independent methods, same direction of travel.
Is AI-referred lead quality real, or a sample-size illusion?
Partly real, heavily overstated. The eye-catching conversion multiples nearly all come from datasets where AI traffic is a rounding error.
Seer's much-quoted 15.9% ChatGPT conversion rate came from roughly 11,000 AI sessions against nearly 14 million organic sessions on a single client, with AI accounting for 0.07% of organic traffic [5]. The authors say so plainly, and note that across their wider client base AI traffic ranges from 0.05% to nearly 4% of organic.
Semrush puts the scale problem in context: across 50,000 sites in 2025, AI traffic grew 66.02% but represented under 0.15% of total visits [10]. Contentsquare has it at 0.2% of visits, growing 632% year on year [3].
Small denominators produce unstable ratios. When a channel supplies a few thousand sessions, a handful of high-intent buyers can move the conversion rate by several percentage points, and early AI adopters skew engaged, affluent and technically confident.
Concentration compounds the fragility. Previsible analysed 6.77 million AI-driven sessions across 166 GA4 properties and found ChatGPT accounting for 92.4% of trackable large language model referrals [15]. Most "AI referral" benchmarks are ChatGPT benchmarks, and would move sharply if one product changed how it links out.
Demand is still expanding fast regardless. Salesforce reported agentic search as the first step in shopping journeys growing 200% year on year, drawing on behavioural data across 1.5 billion shoppers in mid-2026 [16].
There is also an unsolved attribution problem. Assistants increasingly send visitors to homepages: Similarweb recorded homepage referrals rising from roughly 27% of ChatGPT referrals to roughly 62% after a May 2026 update [13]. Homepage arrivals look like brand-intent traffic, which converts well for reasons that have nothing to do with AI.
How to read these numbers
Panel data and server-side data are not interchangeable. Pew, SparkToro and Similarweb measure what a sample of real browsers did. Adobe, Shopify, Semrush and Contentsquare measure what happened on sites they instrument. Google's mobile app is largely invisible to panels, which SparkToro flags as a likely source of understatement [9].
Attribution rules differ by vendor. Some count only referrer-tagged AI sessions, some infer from landing patterns, and assistants strip referrers inconsistently. A meaningful share of "AI traffic" lands in direct.
Selection effects are the biggest single risk here. AI Overviews are not randomly assigned to queries, AI referrals are not randomly assigned to landing pages, and early AI users are not a random sample of buyers.
Several widely quoted figures are projections rather than observations. Semrush's 2028 crossover timeline is an extrapolation of adoption curves, and Seer's forward CTR figures are regression outputs with no seasonality adjustment [4][6].
Finally, sample size. Any conversion claim built on fewer than 50,000 sessions in a channel is directional at best, and much of what circulates rests on far less. The AI search adoption statistics give the wider context for how small the underlying user base still is.
What this means going into 2027
Stop reporting AI referrals as a traffic line. At under 0.2% of sessions but revenue per visit above parity, session counts make the channel look irrelevant and revenue makes it look worth resourcing.
Assume the conversion premium shrinks. Every measured gap between AI and non-AI traffic has narrowed as AI users moved from early adopters towards the general population, and the same mean reversion that closed the 2024 deficit should erode the 2026 premium.
Budget for citation as loss mitigation, not growth. Being cited in an AI Overview roughly doubles organic clicks per impression, and still leaves you well short of the no-Overview baseline [6].
Check your query mix before panicking about CTR. If most of your revenue comes from transactional queries, where AI Overviews appear on around 5% of searches, the collapse figures do not describe your traffic [6].
Rebuild landing pages for verification. More than half of AI-referred sessions now start on a product page, and those visitors arrive with a claim they want confirmed [1].
