Tom Riley, AI search consultant, bought his first ecommerce site in 2025, a six figure revenue dropshipping business with weak CRO, dated design and poor SEO, the biggest purchase of his life. This write-up covers why he bought it, the early commercial traffic growth, and the high-risk payment processor roadblock that followed.
What this post covers:
- Why Tom Riley bought a six figure revenue ecommerce dropshipping site
- What was wrong with it: CRO, design and SEO
- Commercial traffic growth within the first four weeks
- The high-risk payment processor problem and what it taught him
A few weeks ago, I made the biggest purchase of my life.
I spotted an ecommerce dropshipping site for sale that was pulling in six figures plus annually (revenue, not profit) but had terrible CRO, awful design and poor SEO work.
I knew with some minor work I could at least 5x the commercial traffic and hopefully have myself a nice passive income asset that I could sell on.
The deal
After weeks of WhatsApp back-and-forth with a man from Saudi Arabia, we finally agreed on a price. No escrow, just a bit of nervy mutual trust, and he transferred me the domain.
Four weeks in
Although there is still a long way to go, within four weeks I have significantly increased traffic. All commercial traffic, straight to the product pages, no blog traffic.
Long term I think I can take this to 2,000 to 5,000 clicks a day. The playbook is the same one behind my own trade lead generation assets: clean technical fixes, clear commercial entities, and traffic pointed at pages that make money.
The roadblock
But I did not anticipate one major roadblock: finding a payment processor for this industry. Turns out high-risk businesses do not have it easy. So here I am, traffic up but revenue still at zero, and a lot of pissed off emails from potential customers.
On that note, if you happen to know any high-risk industry payment processors that are compatible with Shopify, or you work in this industry, message me on LinkedIn.
